Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017), Galaxy A7 (2017): Hands-on and first impressions

“What does the consumer want today when it comes to smartphones? Good looks, features, great camera and a price tag which makes it worth the purchase. If one broadly classifies, there is a section of consumers which prefers budget smartphones that can be used for a small amount of time and then upgraded as desired without burning a hole in the pocket. The second category absolutely swears by the premium price tag and treats the device like a child for a significant number of years and upgrading only when there is a dire need. Then there is a third category, which somewhere lies between the budget or mid-range and premium segment. Apologies for stereotyping here, but similar to how the structure of upper middle class families works, these range of upper mid-range smartphones also offer a gorgeous architecture, aping the premium segment, while keeping the costs controlled by not being over ambitious with specs”

Samsung Gear S2, Gear S3 and Gear Fit on iOS

Samsung and iOS

Samsung announced along side the release of the Gear S2 way back in 2015 that they would work with Apple to make Samsung wearbles compatible with iOS. After a small beta program in 2016, it’s finally a reality for those who have been waiting. Now of course they have separate apps for whether or not its part of the S series or just Fit series. Both apps are pretty similar in design and functionality, there is more information listed below on the apps and how to pair the devices.

Pairing the wearables

To pair their iPhone with one of Samsung’s Gear wearable, Apple users need to download one of Samsung’s new iOS apps. With the Gear S3 and Gear S2, that means downloading the Gear S app, available via the iTunes app store. Meanwhile, the Gear Fit 2 with the iOS requires the Samsung Gear. Once iOS users download and launch the corresponding app, Samsung’s software will guide you through a step by step set-up.

Samsung Gear S

The Samsung Gear S application connects Samsung Gear S2 and Gear S3 to your mobile device. It also manages and monitors Samsung Gear S2/S3 features and applications installed through Gear app store. Some features include:
– Connect to and disconnect from a mobile device
– Application download and settings
– Find my Gear
Install the Samsung Gear S application on your mobile device, then pair your Samsung Gear S2 or Gear S3 with a Bluetooth connection and enjoy all of its features.

Samsung Gear Fit

The Samsung Gear Fit application connects Samsung Gear Fit2 to your mobile device. It also manages and monitors Samsung Gear Fit2 features and applications installed through Gear App store.
Use the Samsung Gear Fit application to set up and manage the following features:
– Connect to and disconnect from a mobile device
– Application download and settings
– Find my Gear
Install the Samsung Gear Fit application on your mobile device, then pair your Samsung Gear Fit2 with a Bluetooth connection and enjoy all of its features.

What Is Apple Wi-Fi Calling and How To Use It

Apple iPhone Wi-Fi Calling

On December 12, 2016, Telus released a carrier update to compatible Apple iPhone devices enabling Apple’swificalling new Wi-Fi Calling feature. This feature allows customers to send or receive calls or text messages (SMS and MMS) via Wi-Fi when their compatible device has little or no cellular coverage. You can use Wi-Fi calling the same as you do on the cellular network, even if the person on the other end is not using Wi-Fi Calling.

Though there is no additional cost to enable Wi-Fi Calling on devices, the calls and messages sent using this feature are billed the same as if they were made over Telus’ cellular network (minutes used to make local and nationwide calls are deducted from the customer’s monthly voice allowance and any overage will be rated according to the rate plan). Standard long distance charges apply when using Wi-Fi Calling.

Wi-Fi Calling will only work within Canada at this time.

What you will need

  • An Apple iPhone 6 or newer device (includes iPhone SE) with iOS 10.2 or newer installed.
  • An active TELUS Wireless Postpaid rate plan with LTE SIM card.
  • A Wi-Fi network allowing Voice over IP (VOIP) calling. Call quality does depend on the network and a minimum download speed of 0.5Mbps is recommended.

How to Activate the Feature

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Select Phone.
  3. Select Wi-Fi calling then turn on
  4. You will need to read and accept the Wi-Fi Calling Terms and Conditions
  5. Enter your Emergency 911 Address.
This is important as this is the address that 911 dispatchers will use if they cannot get a location from the caller in an emergency.
