(rubs hands) – Android 12, it is here or it's being announced. The new beta where Google actually tells us what the biggest new user facing features will be, has been announced. And, I have seen a demo and I've played around with the beta here on my phone, and I have some thoughts. Do you wanna hear my thoughts or would you rather just see what's new in Android 12? Oh, why not both… This is Android 12. (upbeat music) Android 12 looks different from what you're used to on Android, actually very different. Google says that this is the biggest visual overhaul since 2014, or maybe ever, depending on who you're asking. And yeah, a lot of the pieces of this operating system here do look very different, but it all basically still works the same. You've got a home screen, you swipe up for apps, you swipe on for quick settings and for your notifications, etcetera, etcetera.
What you're really looking at here with these big buttons and the really big bubbly sliders and so on is how the Android team has decided to implement a new design system that Google is calling Material U. Now, Material UX or material UI just Material U like Y O U, whatever. Now, when you're looking at the B roll and the screen recordings and the screenshots on this phone, you should know that it is how Google is implementing Material U on the Pixel. Whether and how Samsung or Xiaomi or OnePlus decide to implement it is going to be different. And also, you know, much later because their updates always come later than the Pixel. Anyway, I don't have the full details on Material U and how it works and so on. But, I do know that it's supposed to apply to everything from the web to Android, to apps, to even hardware.
What that means is I'm just, I'm not going to get any of the HETI UI versus UX versus you. You stuff here. I'm just going to talk about what I am seeing here on this phone. And what I am seeing is good. For the Android team the U part of material you hear is an automatic theming system. So, when you set a new wallpaper you're gonna to be given the option to have Android pull up some colors from your photo and then, apply that theme with those colors to the system. So you can see here that the buttons have turned green, and there's also an algorithm for pulling out complementary colors from the photo. It's kind of neat, but I don't know that I would have picked this particular green if I were beaming at myself. And the good news is is you can pick whatever colors you really want to. So that's neat, but really I can tell you the whole story of this visual redesign just by looking at a couple of screen recording.
So, here's Android 11 and here is Andrew 12. So first there's a bunch of new like lighting effects when you unlock the phone, you can kinda see colors and shadows and light kinda sweep around. And, in general there's just more animations all over the operating system. And we're gonna come back to why that is, but look, they're even taking advantage of these animations on the lock screen buttons, and you can see the little color from the material U theming as well. Now, when we pull down the quick settings and notification shade you see that they are just very big, easy to recognize easy to understand buttons. Google's just not afraid of taking up more space with all of their UI and they're not trying to cram everything into the most information dense thing possible.
I actually think it's like a nice direction. There is another subtle difference in the notification shade, you can see that it's just covering the entire screen instead of sort of being a translucent layer over. It makes it into an entirely new space. And if you look at the notifications themselves you'll see that they're groups together and signified by a bunch of bubbles for each individual group. So there's conversations and silent notifications and whatever. But if you slide an individual notification away there's this really subtle effect where the hard corner turns into a bubble for just that notification to indicate that is its own separate thing. Now on the home screen, let's just pause a moment to look at these widgets. They are brand new and they're based on an entirely new system for making widgets that is based on these principles from the material U design system.
So, Google is gonna update a bunch of their own widgets, but they're also hoping that they can get a bunch of developers on board to update their old widgets to the new system. And, I really hope it works because the widget ecosystem on Android has gotten really crufty and messy over time and it is due for a refresh. Now, next stop are quick settings and Google changes quick settings every single year. And this year is no different. The new thing this year is that the buttons are huge! I mean, just look at them, but I don't know. I kinda like it. Google also puts smart home controls and Google wallet into quick settings finally, which means that now holding down the power button brings up the assistant just like it does on the iPhone and on Galaxy phones. And all of that means "adiós weird power button menu from Android 11!". You tried… Finally in quick settings there are toggles for camera and mic access and we're going to get to those in a minute.
Oh you know what, one more thing I just have to talk about that's not in the screen recordings, the new lock screen when you don't have any notifications you have this giant clock on it and it's dope and it matches your color theme. We do have notifications. It's still pretty big. It just gets a little bit smaller. It's a good lock screen! Now the version of the Android beta that Google is releasing this month, doesn't have all of the gewgaws and bells and whistles that you just saw but, there's enough here that you can see where Google is going with it.
Like, even if you just look at the settings I have all of the icons and the text is bigger and they've got this new over scroll animation that kinda squeezes things together. It's a big redesign but it's not a complete overhaul of how everything works. Every design gets crufty over time. And Android was definitely starting to show a lot of inconsistencies as new features piled on and old ones were kind of half forgotten. I see this design as a general cleanup. All the buttons are big and bubbly and I see a sense that things are going to be a little bit more coherent now, and, I dig that. So that is the new design system, but I wanna come back to a thing I mentioned at the top to the smoothness thing.
Android has a, a reputation that the only way to make it smooth and good-looking is to throw more powerful hardware at it with faster refresh screens or more RAM or whatever. With Android 12, Google's promising that they're going to make the animation smoother for everybody through software improvements. So, we sat down with Sameer Samat, the VP of product management for Android and Google play. And here's how he explains it. – So we've done a few things to make things to make the system feel smooth. We've reduced lock contention and key services, [Sameer] activity window and package manager. What that really means is, there are multiple different parts of the system trying to talk to the operating system at the same time. And that's when you see things jitter or genic, by smoothing a lot of that out and by reducing, for example, the amount of time that Android system server uses by 22%, actually. We've been able to make all the motion and animation feel super smooth. – All right, there are a few other interesting features that are being announced today. So, there is a proper remote control app for Android TV.
They're going to have car unlock that works with NFC or UWB if your phone has it and that'll work with a few different partners. And later this year, if you have a Chromebook it's going to be able to directly access the photo library on your Android phone. So next up is privacy updates. Google is putting privacy updates in every version of Android. That is great. And this year there really are a bunch.
The main thing that Google is trying to do this year is tamp down on unfettered access to your location, your camera and your microphone. So there are new indicators in the upper right-hand corner when they're being accessed. And there are those new buttons and quick settings that just fully turns off your camera or your microphone. So, when you toggle them off, an app that looks your camera just gets a black, nothing. It thinks the camera's there, but really it's just getting nothing. There is also a new privacy dashboard that will show you how often those sensors have been accessed and by which apps. So you can view your data from the past 24 hours in a pie chart or in a timeline, and then turn off all the different access stuff from there. Now for location, there is a new kind of permission that you can grant to an app that's approximate location instead of just precise location. So, say you've got something like a weather app and you don't want it to know your precise GPS pin but you want to know what neighborhood you're in, you can give it an approximate location.
So let's all the privacy stuff for sensors, but there's also this new part of the operating system called the Android private compute core. Now you might think it's a chip because core but it's not, instead it's, it's like a sandbox part of the operating system for machine learning things. It doesn't store data. It runs processes. – A good way to think about it is, when you have these advanced technologies, like for example speech recognition or natural language processing, and they need access to certain information. Another favorite example of mine is smart reply. [Sameer] Awesome feature, looks at your notifications your chat notifications, and suggests replies based on a speech and language model.
All of that runs on device in private compute core. – From my perspective, basically what all that means is that if Google wants Android to be able to do something with AI that you might think is creepy, now they can put all of those processes in a box and limit all communication into and out of that box and everything in the box can't access the network and it's only accessible via limited API. So, that all seems great but is it more secure? We'll see. So that's all the privacy stuff that Google wants to talk about but, there is another kind of privacy that Google really isn't keen on discussing that much. And that is app tracking for ads. Now, there have been rumors that Google would follow Apple and limit some kind of app tracking for things like ads but, Google also makes all of its money on ads.
So – Taking a step back on this one, there's obviously a lot changing in the, in the ecosystem. One thing about Google is that, it is a platform company. It's also a company that is deep in the advertising space. So we're thinking, very deeply about how we should evolve the advertising ecosystem. You've seen what we're doing on Chrome. [Sameer] From our standpoint on Android, we don't have anything to announce at the moment but we are taking a position that privacy and advertising don't need to be directly opposed with each other, [Sameer] that we don't believe is healthy for the overall ecosystem as a company.
So we're thinking about that working with our developer partners and we'll be sharing more later this year. – All right, well, stay tuned for news from Google on that later. And speaking of later, when are you gonna be able to get Android 12 on your Android phone? Well, do you have a Pixel? Because then the answer is easy. You're going to get it this fall. Do you not have a Pixel? Well, then the answer is later. Google says that the speed by which companies are updating their phones to the latest version of Android has improved by 30% but still, other manufacturers besides Google just take awhile to get the latest version of Android on their phones. That's just how Android works. Alright. That's Android 12, a huge redesign that adds some consistency and coherency with big buttons, big sliders, big everything! There's more theming options. There's a bunch of privacy indicators.
There's a bunch of stuff that they put in the developer betas that I haven't even covered here and a TV remote. This isn't the most massive release ever but you know what, it's enough. (transition sound) Hey everybody, thanks so much for watching, right now it is the middle of Google IO, which means that there is a lot going on and we're going to have a lot more coverage of everything Google has announced, and, you know, in general it's just a big tech week. So I think there's gonna be a couple more videos on the verge you're gonna wanna check out….
Hello everyone and welcome to another topical deep dive here on the Cord Cutters News channel. And so this week, we wanted to take a look at the world of smart TVs, those TV models that have streaming app support built right into them. The idea there is you don’t need a separate box from Roku, Amazon, Apple, etc. So they could be a convenient choice for cord cutters and streamers at a variety of price points. And honestly, it’s getting harder and harder to find a non-smart TV these days, so let’s explore a bit, shall we? And in this video, we’re going to highlight some of the reasons why smart TVs make sense, as well as some of their disadvantages. And we’ll also highlight some of the biggest names in smart TVs right now. If you’re in the market for a new TV and you’re considering one with smart capabilities built right in, we hope you find this one useful.
This is… the state of smart TVs in 2021. Why Smart TVs Can Be a Great Choice First off, let’s talk about why smart TVs might be a good choice for your next TV. And perhaps the biggest perk to smart TVs is the convenience. Since smart TVs pack in some sort of streaming platform, you don’t have to worry about hooking up an external device like a Roku Ultra or Apple TV to have access to your apps. And that can be a great space saver, since you don’t have to dedicate shelf space for a separate device and you’ll likely have fewer remotes to deal with. And honestly, despite having access to an absurd amount of streaming devices in our household, we still use our LG’s built-in smart TV platform for the vast majority of our streaming needs because of that convenience, and that includes using just the one remote. However, there are still instances where we’ll use other devices to access certain apps, which leads us to why smart TVs sometimes aren’t the best choice. Why Smart TVs Can Be a Not-So-Great Choice So yes, smart TVs are everywhere these days, and there’s no shortage of choices on the market from a wide range of manufacturers.
But there are instances where a given smart TV might not be the best choice for your streaming needs. For one, just like their dedicated device siblings, smart TV platforms all have their inherent strengths and weaknesses. And that can include things like varying levels of app support, or performance issues. Sometimes, pairing software with lower-cost, lower-performance TV hardware can result in a less-than-pleasant viewing experience. And for me, that’s most often when I turn to an external device rather than my LG OLED’s built-in webOS software. Certain apps, like Sling or Pluto TV for example, simply run better and more smoothly on other hardware that I have access to.
And just like external streaming devices, smart TV performance might be a concern over time. So maybe your smart TV software worked just fine for the first few years, but as apps have gotten more complex, overall performance might feel slower over time. In that case, you might feel a need to upgrade or, if the TV itself is doing just fine as, you know a TV, maybe resorting to an external streaming device to serve up those apps. You may also find yourself in a situation where there’s a specific TV with specs and performance you really like, but you’re not a fan of the built-in smart TV software.
Conversely, you could find yourself really liking a specific smart TV platform, like Roku TV or Fire TV for example, but you can’t quite find a supported TV model with the hardware specs you’re looking for. So you might find yourself buying a smart TV more for its hardware capabilities and just bypassing the built-in software altogether and going with a Roku Ultra, Nvidia Shield or any number of external devices instead. And with all of that being said, let’s take a look at some of the top names in smart TVs right now, starting with a brand that should be very familiar to streaming fans out there.
Roku TV Of course, any discussion about smart TVs should include Roku TV, the platform that combines the well-known Roku streaming software with TVs from a variety of manufacturers, including Hisense, Philips, RCA, Sharp, TCL, and several others. One of the biggest perks of the Roku TV platform is the sheer variety on offer. You can choose from a number of models across a wide range of price points. And they each feature access to Roku’s tried-and-true user interface and impressive app support. So if you’ve maybe used Roku’s dedicated streaming devices in the past, moving to a Roku TV smart TV should offer a pretty seamless transition. On the downside, despite solid TV maker support, you might find it tough to find Roku’s software built into a TV with the exact specs you’re looking for. And that can include, say, high-end OLED models, which often have some of the best picture quality currently available. If you have your sights set on a fancy OLED model, you won’t be able to find one with Roku’s software built in. Of course, if you still want that Roku user interface and app support, the company will happily sell you a standalone device, but as far as Roku TVs go, your best bet is in the lower-cost to mid-range televisions.
As far as specific models go, there are several to choose from, but we suggest taking a look at Hisense’s affordable line of R6 series Roku TVs or TCL’s 6-Series 4K QLED displays to start. Fire TV Like Roku TV, Amazon’s Fire TV platform also enjoys some solid TV maker support, with companies like JVC, Toshiba, and Westinghouse on board. And also like Roku TV, the major perk here is pairing Amazon’s popular Fire TV platform with well-known TV manufacturers. So you get the familiar Fire TV interface, along with the platform’s solid app support. Also like Roku TV, the Fire TV models on the market now are mainly LCD options, rather than higher-end OLED displays. Now, to be fair, German TV maker Grundig does produce an OLED TV with Fire TV software built-in, but here in the US, you’re mainly going to find LCD models on offer. And those often range from low-cost, budget models to mid-range to higher-end, non-OLED TVs. And again, there are plenty of models to choose from, but we’d recommend starting your Fire TV search with Toshiba’s C350 line, which includes 43-, 50-, and 55-inch models.
Android TV Another smart TV platform with solid TV maker support comes from Google. It’s the company’s Android TV platform, which you’ll find support for from a number of familiar names, including ones we’ve already discussed. So if you’re currently shopping for an Android-powered smart TV, you can select models from makers like Panasonic, Philips, Sharp, Sony, TCL, Toshiba, and several others. Besides Android TV’s robust app support, another thing the smart TV platform has going for it is support for high-end displays. So if you’re looking for an OLED TV with Android software built in, you have some choices, courtesy of Sony and its growing line of OLED TVs. Now, like most OLEDs on the market, these aren’t exactly budget models, but if you want top-shelf display quality and Android TV software, you definitely have some options. Of course, you can also choose from more budget-oriented models, as well as midrange options that balance price and features.
Overall, we’d suggest including TCL’s 4-Series in your search if you’re looking for an affordable Android TV. And maybe check out Sony’s A80J if you’re looking for an OLED option. Tizen And then we get into smart TV platforms that are tied to specific manufacturers. For instance, there’s Samsung, who makes a wide, wide range of TVs at all manner of price points and leverages the Tizen platform for its smart TV models. And like other smart TV platforms, Tizen offers up solid app support and Samsung’s been working to increase its value as a content hub for your streaming needs. So yes, your manufacturer choices are more limited than, say, Fire TV, Android TV, or Roku TV, but there is a ton of choice within Samsung’s lineup. At the more affordable end, we’d suggest checking out the AU8000 line. And for folks looking for high-end displays, the company’s QN90A QLED line is a great place to start. webOS LG is another major TV maker that’s been going its own route as far as smart TV software goes. And in this case, the company uses webOS for its LCD and OLED displays.
Like Tizen, you’ll find solid app support, though perhaps not as robust as you might find on Roku or Fire TV. For instance, Pluto TV only recently made an appliance on webOS TVs. So, like other platforms, it pays to make sure your favorite apps are supported ahead of time. But as far as hardware options go, LG similarly offers a wide range of choices from low-cost models to ultra-high-end displays. At the budget end, check out the UP7000 series of LCD TVs. If you’re looking for something more advanced, the C1 line of OLED TVs offers impressive specs and picture quality. SmartCast Last, but not least, we have Vizio and its SmartCast line of TVs.
And again, like Samsung and LG, there is solid app support to be found here, especially when it comes to big-name services like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video. However, there’s currently no HBO Max app available for SmartCast. Though Vizio says you can get around that by loading up the app on your mobile device and casting it to your TV via Apple AirPlay or Google Chromecast. And you might also find smaller apps aren’t quite yet supported on the service just yet. We often post updates on Cord Cutters News dot com about popular apps arriving on smart TV platforms like SmartCast, and those sometimes come months after a particular app has been on services like Roku or Fire TV. So keep an eye out for app support for sure.
On the bright side, SmartCast is available on Vizio’s expansive range of TVs, ranging from budget, 1080p displays to higher-end LCDs and, more recently, OLED TVs as well. On the lower-end, take a look at the company’s V Series and M Series of TVs. Meanwhile, the high-end has options like the 55- or 65-inch Vizio OLED TVs to choose from. Wrapping it All Up So there you go, we hope that helps shed some light on the current landscape of smart TVs. As you can see, it’s often a balancing act. Sometimes, the platform with the best app support might not be available in the higher-end TV. Conversely, that high-end, luxury-priced display might not come packing the streaming platform you're most comfortable with. In the end, it’s really up to you, your wants and needs, and (of course) your budget. Hopefully you can strike the right balance when it comes time for a new TV. And don’t forget, even with smart TVs and their built-in software, you can always tack on an external, standalone streaming device if your needs change later.
You might lose out on some of the convenience perks, like using one remote for everything, or not having to deal with HDMI inputs as often. But it’s important to note that you don’t necessarily have to feel locked into a particular smart TV’s software. That said, if you’re ready for a new centerpiece for your living room, or looking for a space-saving model for the bedroom or office, we hope we’ve given you a solid start point here. And as always, thank you all for watching. If you haven’t done so already, please do consider clicking on those like and subscribe buttons down below as they really help us out. And until next time, my name is Philip Palermo. Thanks again for tuning in and we’ll see you all next time.
My goodness. I like this mysterious package. It’s always exciting to open the box, but I happen to know what’s inside. It’s a product prototype sticker that has attracted a lot of attention on the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform. This is not, this is The business card is still their CEO’s business card. Throw it away ♂~ The smallest mobile phone in the world is so small that it’s unbelievable. ZANCO tiny t1 The smallest mobile phone in the world. It's the "smallest" mobile phone. This is smaller than those. Synchronize contacts and music on your mobile phone. Monochrome screen voice changer. 3 days standby time.
Built-in Bluetooth mobile phone plugs into a Nano-sized card. It can store 500 text messages. This mobile phone has a voice changer. You can become male and female, children, old cartoon characters, teenagers, Optimus Prime Duck, EVA robot WALL·E robot, Rap guy and Rap girl are starting to become fun. Let’s take a look at this stuff. How small is your child! WOW! It’s so small that it’s unbelievable. Am I dreaming? It seems that there is a speaker SIM card inserted from the side on the back. Compared with this, I feel that the Nano card has become bigger and smaller than my thumb. It is about the same size as the SD card. It is about a coin. It is bigger than a small lighter. The ketchup bag is much smaller, about the size of two pieces of chewing gum, which is too small! With a micro USB cable for charging, there is also a card pin, which sells for $55. You may be thinking, who is the user group for this thing? I feel that this is a fun thing for people who will try all kinds of things .
I took this out at a party. Everyone was stunned. They would definitely be stunned to make a phone call with this thing. The buttons on the phone are better than me. His fingers are much smaller, Jack, what do you think? hhhhhhh This is Pixel 2XL. Of course, the two phones have different goals. But if you look at the comparison, this is too small . The boot time appears. When the battery is full, I need to insert the SIM card. Try to make a call. Woolen cloth? Looks like I have a text message . Let’s try to make a call. Will you have your cell phone number? Did you hear that? Not bad . It's connected. That's weird. Oh WOW! The speaker is quite loud Will: Yo~ Hey man, your voice is very clear. Will: Uh, your voice is also very clear. Really? I didn’t expect this thing to have a good call quality. You too, I feel very clear that I don’t need to bring my mobile phone like a secret agent. Just bring this and put it in my socks. If you want to go for a jog, but you’re afraid I have a phone call, but I don’t want to take such a big phone out.
You need a smaller phone, or should I try a voice changer? Okay, I’m going to change positions with Will, Will, your low voice sounds like a robot but it feels weird Things, for example, when you think about sending text messages, it’s surprisingly good to make a scary call. hhhh What the hell, this phone is not black yet. It’s $50. You can buy a normal phone, but it will definitely not be the smallest in the world. For those who like to collect, buy this as a gift for him, he absolutely loves it.
My goodness, it's terrible Super bad That’s right, it’s a disaster To be honest, the matter is much more serious than I thought A simple text symbol that crashed iMessage Just such a symbol makes iMessage completely unusable but I asked Will to look into it to see what the hell was going on It turns out that the actual situation is much more serious On his Macbook, this symbol crashed Havok directly The Note application on the notebook has crashed Just because there is a note in it that contains this symbol Just need a symbol That’s why I called Will over because he was studying this all morning Let’s test it in different ways to see how bad it is His Android machine is here, there is another one here, and then the iPhone X I will copy this symbol in the SMS chat and send it out, and send it to the Android device using the Android device, so that I can confirm that this is a problem only for iOS and OSX.
let's start My cell phone signal is a bit poor, so… Got it, look Nothing happens on the Android machine But what's going to happen next is a bit risky Just such a simple symbol may directly crash the messaging application on iPhone X Kind of crazy The ghost knows if we find this, will other apps have problems? Give it to Jack, show them Okay, that symbol is there, once the mouse touches that symbol Highlight it… collapsed! Show them what happens when you open the note app The note-taking app can’t even be opened IPhone X on the left, your phone on the right I put my phone card in, it might be a disaster I want to warn you, don't do this! I'm not kidding, it's really bad This symbol may crash your phone Yes, let them see what we are talking about Symbols are copied in The SIM card is read on the iPhone X send Will told me before that this is a foreign language Yes, I think it should be the Indian language Anyway, the language symbols of individual countries What if you are in this country? Do you have this symbol on your keyboard? Everyone is going to collapse The sending speed is a bit slow Why I feel that as long as I send a Test, he won’t crash It takes some time Did the iPhone receive it? Oh My God A little dangerous WOW! The phone restarted directly! If I open the text message, click on this text message Ready? But I don’t know why my iMessage app didn’t crash completely Because my next text message rejected the previous one, so it’s okay If someone is stupid and sends you this symbol, then he is willing to help you He can send you a rescue text message In this case, when you open the SMS, the phone does not need to display this symbol Before I send the rescue SMS, I first try to open the SMS app Now send a rescue text message, and then…

The Galaxy S8, the newest infinity displayed flagship from Samsung. But what happens when that display breaks? This thing already passed my durability test with flying colors. Now it’s time to see what this thing is made of, and what it looks like on the inside. Let’s get started. [Intro] There are no visible screws along the outside, which is pretty normal for Samsung these days. It does make the phone slightly harder to repair, but not impossible. The process I am demonstrating is going to be pretty much the exact same for both the Galaxy S8 and the S8 Plus. But the replacement parts are going to be different.
I’ll have those linked separately in the description. I’ve warmed up the back of the phone with my heat gun or hair dryer until it’s just barely too hot to touch. Then I can stick a thin metal pry tool between the metal frame and the glass of the phone. Lift it up just high enough to slip a playing card or business card inside, and that will help you get around that curve without breaking anything.
If you need replacement backs, or if you break yours during your repair, they are pretty inexpensive so don’t stress out too much. After slicing through both sides, I’ll slip my green pry tool in to hold the glass up and keep it from resealing itself onto the phone body. The rest of the adhesive will be easy to cut away after that. Remember it’s important not to go too deep inside of the phone because there is important stuff under there that can be punctured, like the wireless charging or the battery. So stick around the edges. Once the back glass is free, we can see the fingerprint scanner up along the top. It’s still attached to the real panel. The first interesting thing that we find is all the warnings on the battery. You got normal stuff like don’t burn, don’t puncture, avoid extreme temperatures. And then you get this no dogs allowed sign. Like, I’m not a dog person myself, but I don’t advocate pet discrimination either.
Are cats and goldfish okay? I don’t really understand the rules anymore and Samsung just kind of made it weird. There are 14 screws holding down the first layer of guts. The circle-y thing is the wireless charging. We cut open one of these on the What’s Inside YouTube channel. The copper wires coil up to receive power through inductance, and then pass that power through the battery into these pins on the motherboard. Pretty sweet technology. Apple will probably invent this technology in the future for one of their next iPhones. So that’s something for iPhone users to look forward to. The battery disconnects from the motherboard easy enough, but there are no magical pull tabs underneath like we’ve seen on some other phones, so it’s time to use brute force.
I’ll use the rounded end of my metal pry tool, taking extreme care not to slice or puncture the battery. I also took special care not to use a dog at any point during this procedure since that’s one of Samsung’s battery requirements. The battery does look pretty cool. It’s got a 3000 milliamp capacity, and it even has a see-through area up at the top for the protection circuit that I talked about during my Note 7 video. The clear plastic on the battery makes me want a clear phone even more. It’s also cool that the inside of the phone is the same color as the outside – just like what we saw with the red iPhone that I took apart a few weeks ago. The loud speaker is the next piece to come out. It’s got a little water damage indicator down at the bottom. Remember, these phones are water resistant and not water proof.
It still has those golden contact points where it receives it’s power and signal from the phone. Before we can remove the charging port, we have to take out the main board. I’ll start disconnecting the wire cables at the bottom; there are three of those. Then the screen ribbon unsnaps like a little Lego from the side of the motherboard. After that I’ll move up to the front sensor array ribbon cable, and the front facing camera ribbon connector. And then, you know, there’s the SIM card tray that I should have removed before we started. At the base of the motherboard there’s a Lego connector for the charging port, but it’s on the underside of the board making things a little more complicated than it should be. I’ll give you a better view of that in just a second. Now that the motherboard is out, we have the plastic Samsung heat pipe.
This helps keep the processor cool since copper is a better conductor of heat than aluminum is. The thermal transfer away from the processor is more efficient than with copper. Now the rear 12 megapixel camera has it’s own Lego-like connection on the motherboard. I’ll snap that off and push the camera through the board. This is definitely replaceable. Just for kicks and giggles I’ll pull out the front facing camera as well. This little guy is attached to the iris scanner. If you look at the rear camera, you can see it move around inside of the frame. This is called the OIS, or optical image stabilization. I’ll show you more of how this works in just a second. On the front camera unit, the iris scanner is solid and normally the front facing camera is solid as well, but this one has movement. Samsung didn’t advertise having stabilization on this front camera, but it looks like they might have been playing around with the idea of adding it.
OIS takes image quality to the next level so it would be pretty awesome if they did. I’ll tuck that front facing camera back into the frame and clip the rear camera back into place as well. Let’s take a look at that earpiece speaker. Remember, during my durability test I complained that the grill size was way smaller on the new S8 than it was on the older S7.
It turns out that the internal speakers are pretty much the same size. If anything, the S8 might even be a little bit larger of a speaker, so no worries there. Since the speaker does sit a little lower than the actual earpiece slot, this channel directs the sound out of the hole in the front. This sensor array at the front is all connected with this ribbon cable. And the volume and Bixby buttons are all connected with these golden contact pads.
The round vibrator has it’s own two contact pads. And the power button is built the same way – two little contact pads resting up against the motherboard. Now for the bottom of the phone. The headphone jack is very easily replaceable, just one little screw to hold it in place. And it has the same little Lego style ribbon connector connecting it to the charging port board. You can see the little rubber seal around the headphone jack to help keep the water out. There are 5 more screws holding the charging port board to the frame. And here is the charging port itself. Incredible nice that we don’t have the front capacitive button reach around that we saw in the Galaxy S6- that was a nightmare. The charging port is pretty standard. It’s got the USBC port and the little microphone off to the side.
This phone is actually pretty easy to work on once you get inside that glued shut back glass. From the exterior you can see that there is metal all around the edge of the phone, but now that we have the guts taken out and the internals of the S8 exposed, we can see that it’s the same hunk of metal throughout the entire device which fully explains the rigidity of the phone. Metal is pretty solid. There’s a little slot in the frame for the screen ribbon to poke through. Speaking of the screen, replacing a cracked display is not cheap or easy with a Samsung. For one, it’s glued into place. And two, the curved AMOLED panels are pretty expensive. I’ll have the current pricing linked in the video description for you. Since the screen is glued in, the old display is essentially sacrificed in the removal process. Once it is heated up and removed, similar to how we did the back panel, just feed the new screen ribbon through the metal frame of the phone and plop it down into place.
I did this with the Galaxy S7 teardown if you’re interested in seeing the exact process. Since this screen is not broken though, I’ll leave it intact. And I’ll talk about a few ways to protect your phone towards the end of the video. Assembling the phone is a piece of cake. Charging port gets tucked back into place along with the headphone jack. This is a pretty great use of space, Samsung. There are 6 screws holding down all the components.
Then get those round wires tucked into the grooves along the metal frame. Now the charging port is connected at the base of the motherboard which is normal for Samsung, but strange to the rest of us. I’ll plug that in before setting the rest of the motherboard into place making sure there are no ribbons or connections stuck underneath the board as it goes down. I’ll clip in the front sensor array, and then the iris scanner and front facing camera. There are those 3 signal wires down at the bottom of the motherboard. The circular heads are pretty fragile so make sure you are gentle as you press them into place. And finally the screen ribbon snaps into place like a little Lego. The loud speaker is next. It’s easiest to snap the plastic into the metal frame from the bottom edge first. And the last thing we plug in is the battery. This is for the phone’s own protection. Normally you’ll want to put adhesive under the battery as well.
And you should definitely not turn your phone on at this point, but I kind of want to show you something cool, so I’m going to do it anyway. Remember the camera stabilization I talked about earlier? Here it is in action. The camera is turned on right now and the phone hardware is physically stabilizing the camera image to compensate for the shakiness or the movement of my hands.
Huge thumbs up for that. It’s seriously one of the best features you can have in a smart phone, and not every phone comes with this kind of hardware stabilizing. I think it’s pretty sweet. I check the front camera, but it doesn’t look like there is any kind of movement or stabilizing in the lens. So while Samsung might have considered adding OIS on that front camera, it’s definitely not enabled at the moment.
Now the phone is turned off again. I will set the wireless charging into place and get all 14 screws screwed in. And finally I can clip in the fingerprint scanner ribbon. This is a tedious process that reminds me a lot of the iPhone 5s. I maybe could have popped the fingerprint scanner out of the back glass and set it into place on the inside, but I wanted to keep that seal with the back glass as tight as possible, and my green tool worked just fine. The best kind of repair is the one you don’t have to do. The best way to keep your phone from breaking in the future is to protect it with a case or a skin.
A naked phone is just asking for trouble. A skin, like the one you see here from dbrand, goes a long way for adding grip, keeping that phone scratch free, and adding a raised surface around the camera lens for a little extra protection. I’ll toss a link in the description for you. And thanks to dbrand for supporting this video. Hopefully it will save people money when they break their phones in the future. If you want to check out a few other projects I’m working on, Instagram and Twitter have all my behind the scenes. And let me know if you were successful in repairing your own phone. Thanks a ton for watching! I’ll see you around..
