Taking a moment to reflect: how team members with military connections honour Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the official end of the World War I on November 11, 1918. In Canada, we commemorate the day with services, moments of silence, and with community – coming together to remember the sacrifices of so many Canadians over the past century and a half.

Share your gratitude

Remember with Optik TV

Beginning on November 11, BC and Alberta customers can watch a new documentary project on Optik TV. Created by General Rick Hillier, former chair of our TELUS Atlantic Community Board, and just in time to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Great War, this documentary focuses on five battles important to Canada: the gas attacks of April 1915, the Battle of the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, and the Last 100 Days and Pursuit to Mons.

Taking a moment to reflect

Here’s how a few team members with a military connection mark this important day.

MichelleI take the day off to spend time with my husband. We attend the ceremony at the local base, where they read through the list of names of the fallen soldiers. After that, we sit down with friends and socialize for a while. My husband lost some friends during his tours. It’s important on this day to really be thankful for what you have, and to not take life for granted.”

– Michelle Drapkin, Store Manager, Koodo

Michelle’s  husband is a warrant officer in the Canadian Armed Forces and has served for 15 years. He has done 2 extended tours of Afghanistan for a total of 18 months, and is responsible for logistics, administration, promoting morale and ensuring welfare for a team of nearly 40 people.

Nicholas Leung“As an Artilleryman, my job is to work the C3 Howitzer at Crab Park in Vancouver for the Remembrance Day 21-gun salute. Being able to participate, to think back, and to remember what we have and why is extremely important to me.These aren’t just names – these are people I know.” – Nicholas Leung, a Computer Console Operator in Technology Strategy & Business Transformation.

Nicholas has served as a Reservist with the 15th Field Artillery Regiment since 2012 when he and a University friend talked about enlisting. While his friend didn’t end up signing up, Nicholas made the commitment. He currently works on the Gun Line team while training for Light Urban Search and Rescue, spending at least one night per week and one weekend per month training.

Christine2“I attend the local Remembrance Day parade and go to the community legion where, as a military family, we all gather. It can be an emotional and difficult day and I find myself being more introspective than usual. These men and women have sacrificed so much. I never waste a moment to be thankful.” – Christine Gallant, Senior Business Analyst with TELUS Business Solutions.

Christine’s husband is currently serving and has been deployed four times. Having moved four times in her 11-year career with TELUS, the flexibility of W͢ork Styles has meant she has continued to grow her own career, which is something many military spouses find challenging.

gregg“I take time off to attend the service in Airdrie. I like to be present. For me the meaning of Remembrance Day has changed with my military experience—we can all honour and remember the sacrifices but they take on a much more personal meaning when you know the people who have been killed or have come back damaged. I think of them and what they saw and how committed they were.” – Gregg Reoch, Field Support Manager with TELUS Business Solutions.

Gregg served for 24 years in the Army, including deployments in Cyprus and Bosnia. While in the Army, Gregg served in the Artillery Corps as well as the Signal Corps. His experience with the military has allowed him to transition more easily to a leadership role at TELUS.

Wade“After the local service, I like to go to the military museum and walk through—taking time to reflect and remember not just my own experiences, but those of so many who came before me. I spend a lot of time reaching out to the people I’ve served with—checking in and seeing how everyone is doing.” – Wade Nesbitt, Field Construction Manager, TELUS Business Solutions

Wade served for 20 years as part of  Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and the Signal Corp, completing tours in the Golan Heights and Bosnia.

Chris P“On Remembrance Day, I am with my unit and we take part in the local services. I grew up with veterans and gained the appreciation that freedom and liberty come at a cost. The moment we forget the ultimate sacrifices of our fallen soldiers, sailors and aviators, we lose the value of the freedoms and liberties we cherish today.” – Chris Pawelko, Engineering Technician, TELUS Business Solutions.

Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather who served in the military, Chris served with the Communications & Electronics Branch and currently serves in the Canadian Forces Cadet Instructor Cadre Branch as the Commanding Officer of the 2383 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps. He has 11-years of service, including in Germany. The experience and skills he learned in the military are a significant reason why he has been able to find work with TELUS.

Rob U“I always stop and pause. It sounds simple, but I also make sure my poppy doesn’t fall off my coat. I go and buy an eraser so I can break off a little piece to use as a backing. Taking that extra moment to reflect and honour those people who have made it possible for me to have the life I have is something I feel strongly about” –  Rob Urquhart, a Business Analyst with Strategy and Development.

Rob grew up wondering about the uncle he barely knew who was serving overseas. Uncle Lloyd (pictured, at right) lived all over the world during his military career but it was only  after he retired that Rob got to know him better and make a meaningful connection.

Meredith M“The last few years, my husband and I have been apart for Remembrance Day. Last year, he participated at a specific service and I was in Fredericton, New Brunswick. We’ve lost friends and others who are trying to make a difference, in or out of uniform, and this day is about honouring them. It’s about taking just a few moments to slow down and acknowledge that this day isn’t about war or violence. It’s about acknowledging that we have what we have because of the people who gave of themselves—whether that was in World War I or II or more recently in places like Afghanistan or Iraq.” – Meredith Millman, Marketing Manager with Business Customer Experience.

Meredith’s grandfather was a colonel in the Army, and her husband currently serves in the Army. She says working for TELUS has relieved a huge amount of stress in her life as she has been able to adapt to the changing demands and locations of being a military spouse, while also maintaining a job she enjoys and feels challenged by.
